Do you ever listen to music while you are writing? For me, it very much depends on what I’m working on. I find if I’m writing or working on a blog post, or perhaps I’m making changes to my website or creating an image for use in a blog post, I will probably listen to something, as I am right at this moment (Night Nurse – Gregory Isaacs). I find that having something in the background helps me keep on track.
The one problem I have with this method of writing, is that I often find myself wanting to sing along (quietly, as I don’t want to embarrass myself!), but that has the effect of stopping my writing, and as a result, I don’t tend to listen to music when I’m working on a short story or other work of fiction. I feel I need my full concentration, and as a man, I’m only able to concentrate on one thing at a time (!).
When I’m writing fiction, I either like to listen to a YouTube clip of rain falling or a thunderstorm, although I must admit I’ve recently been enjoying listing to the sounds of the Starship Enterprise’s warp engines! Another YouTube clip, I don’t actually write on board the enterprise.
So what’s the right kind of music to listen to? Of course, that’s an entirely subjective question and will vary from one person to the next. For me, it varies from day to day, depending on the time of year, the way the wind is blowing, what mood I’m in, etc.
I’m interested to know what you do when you are writing. Is it music? Is it nothing? Is it a coffee shop? Is it a starship?
For the moment, here is what I have on my playlist today, along with links to a few of my faves:
- Buffalo Soldier – Bob Marley
- It Mek – Desmond Dekker
- Murderer – Buju Bantam
- Uptown Top Ranking – Althea and Donna
- Skinhead Moonstomp – Symarip
- 007 – Desmond Dekker
- 54-46 Was my Number – Toots and the Maytals
- I Shot the Sherriff – The wailers
- Pass the Duchie – Musical Youth
- You Don’t Love Me (No, No, No) – Dawn Penn
- Israelites – Desmond Dekker
- Bam Bam – Sister Nancy
- Night Nurse – Gregory Isaacs
- Lickin’ Stick – Desmond Dekker
My Spotify playlists are ordered by genre, so this is the reggae selection. The main drawback of this list, is that the ‘sing-a-long’ factor is high. I’m not smart enough to sing and write at the same time. This list is reserved for photo editing mainly. And cleaning the kitchen.
So what’s in your playlist?
